Central Coast Section

California Music Educators Association (CMEA), Central Coast Section, is a professional organization comprised of music teachers from all levels of education. Its membership comes from Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, and San Luis Obispo Counties. If you wish to contact us via e-mail, please select one of our board members.

During these challenging times, many music programs are experiencing unique challenges including budget cuts and program elimination.  CMEA put out a letter for advocacy to address these issue.  The letter can be found here.

President's Message

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Wow! What an end to the 2019-2020 school year and the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year! Who would have thought something like Covid-19 would happen in our lifetime forcing some of us to rethink our way of teaching. It is on this note that I welcome you to the website for music educators of California's Central Coast! The Central Coast Section of CMEA is one of nine sections in the state. Our board of directors volunteer their time and experience to provide educational performance opportunities for students, while offering professional support for music educators. To this end, our website contains useful resources and pertinent details regarding our events.

Even though our events normally include traditional honor ensembles, large ensemble festivals, and solo/ensemble festivals. This year we may be looking at non-traditional ways to hold the majority of these events, depending more on technology to bring our ensembles together. In an effort to reach our youngest students, and those outside our traditional ensembles, we also offer the Young Ensemble Showcase, and the Songwriters Showcase. The Young Ensemble Showcase (YES!) is an exciting event for our elementary and middle school students and teachers to showcase their work and observe performances by other young musicians. Whether it be recorders, Orff instruments, a choir, or anything else our elementary teachers come up with, YES! is a celebration of young musicians. The Songwriters Showcase is an opportunity for young composers to exhibit their work and receive feedback from a professional musician. Details on both events are available on the Festivals page.

Many of us are looking for ways to approach the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. Some districts are looking at hybrid ways of educating while others are looking at going totally virtual. How does this look for us as music educators? To date we offer PD virtual hangouts where we have been able to share ideas.

This is a time where we need each other more than ever. Our skills and our talents will keep us going strong. Please feel free to reach out to me or any board member with questions, or the need for a helping hand. We would love to be informed of ways to better support you and your students. Also, please join us for one or both of the CMEA-CCS General Meetings and Dinner in September and June. This is a great opportunity for us to connect with each other as music educators. Hope to see you there!

Musically yours,

Diane Gehling
